Performance – Cello Concerto and Quartet
In 2015 It was a great honour to be asked by Andrew Kaldor, Chairman of the Australian company Pelikan Art Pty. Ltd., to compose a Cello Concerto to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the distinguished Japanese corporation Shachihata Inc. and its long relationship with Pelikan Art Pty. Ltd.
The concerto was inspired by the Japanese poet and zen master Basho and his best known haiku ‘The Frog’. The soloist, Catherine Hewgill is principal celiist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and she is accompanied by the Verbruggen Ensemble directed by John Lynch.
An equally exciting commission in 2015 was to compose a Quartet for Flute and Strings. This was commissioned by Helen Bauer in celebration of Helen Lynch and is performed by Janet Webb, principal flautist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Marina Marsden violin, Anne Louise Comerford viola and Catherine Hewgill cello.
The Quartet was performed at a concert in the northern foyer of the Opera House on 15 April 2016.
